What Kind of Music Do The Hissy Kits Play?

The Hissy  Kits perform original music, vintage jazz, and songs from the Great American songbook, interpreted through piano, theremin, voice, and their own genre of Feline Expressionism®. Sometimes they perform classical music and opera when they're feeling fancy.

Contrary to a surprisingly persistent misconception, The Hissy Kits do not play ragtime. The description appears to have originated in an early piece of press coverage and has occasionally been repeated elsewhere.  

While ragtime undeniably helped shape the development of  jazz, ragtime in itself is a distinct genre and The Hissy Kits do not perform ragtime repertoire. The Hissy Kits have the utmost respect for ragtime pianists, and Scotch requests not to be held to their formidable technical standards of syncopation. Ragtime helped lay the groundwork for jazz; The Hissy Kits' style has elements of stride, honky-tonk, swing, sometimes offbeat accents, but ragtime is not in The Hissy Kits repertoire.
